Dance Training Is Life Training
“Dance training is life training” are the words of legendary teacher Joe Tremaine at the 2017 Capezio Ace Awards as he received the Lifetime Achievement Award in Dance Education. As a leading dance studio in West Alabama for almost 60 years, The Dance Centre’s owners, Melissa Verzino and Rebecca Tingle, believe that dance is so much more than just pink ballet slippers, fluffy tutus, creative movement or competition trophies.
Beginning as young as the preschool age, The Dance Centre strives to offer a program not only to instill a love for the art of dance but also developing skills such as balance, flexibility, gross and fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, discipline and creative expression. But after decades of teaching thousands of children and watching them grow into vibrant individuals, the positive effect of dance training in a child’s life is far more evident than just performances on stage.
Jim and Suzie Link are the parents of four daughters who have danced at The Dance Centre for over 20 years. When asked how dance has shaped her children’s lives, Suzie explains that dance “has taught them how to work hard, be disciplined, be self-motivated and at times to even handle disappointment.”
In the beginning, dance classes such as ballet, tap, jazz and hip hop are great ways to introduce a love of music as well as foster artistic expression. Even the most timid dancer can find an outlet for expression through movement they might not know how to vocalize in words when they feel a sense of family and safeness in the studio. “The Dance Centre has been a home away from home for my girls and I can’t imagine a better second family for them to be a part of. The friends and relationships developed at TDC will be ones that we and our children will cherish for a lifetime” says Suzie.
Grace Ann Fikes is a graduating senior at American Christian Academy and has been taking dance at The Dance Centre since the age of three. “Dance has been such an important part of my life. It has given me self-discipline, self-confidence, and lifelong friendships. It has shaped me into the person I am today by teaching me to work hard in everything I do. I love to see the audience’s reactions to our performances as we share our talent” says Grace Ann.
Early on, many of these young dancers aspire to perform with a professional ballet company or become a part of a Tony award-winning Broadway cast. The reality is that a large percentage of young dancers may not use their years of training and expertise professionally. However through dance, without conscious effort, they and their parents have invested in building a strong foundation for becoming independent expressive individuals contributing to our society. Middle school and high school age dancers often display great qualities of organization and commitment. These dancers usually have demanding academic schedules as well and typically develop excellent time-management skills. Sitting confidently in a job interview, grace and poise in professional presentations, and a desire for physical fitness throughout adulthood are only a few of the significant qualities in adults who have grown up with dance in their lives.
Morgan Williams, The University of Alabama dance team coach and a long-time faculty member at The Dance Centre, states that “growing up heavily involved in dance and now teaching and coaching dancers as a profession has revealed the opportunities dance provides to positively impact others.” Morgans says she is “beyond grateful for the teachers/mentors that instilled in her the importance of setting goals and working hard to achieve them.” She says, "Now, I am constantly reminded that teaching dance is a platform to invest in others.” As a mom, I hope my little girl loves dance as much as I do, but if she only dances for a season I know she will be taking away from it so much more than a recital and a tutu.”
As parents, giving our children experiences that foster confidence, grace, resilience, and compassion to help them navigate through a challenging world is our greatest desire. With this task in mind, dance educators have an amazing opportunity to positively impact young lives. Dance training is life training. The Dance Centre is committed to helping students achieve fulfillment through experiences in dance that will stay with them for a lifetime. Come join The Dance Centre family!
